Watches Wednesday: Roger Dubuis Excalibur Spider Pirelli
Roger Dubuis has partnered with Pirelli (that’s right, the renowned motorsports tyre manufacturer) for the new Excalibur Spider Pirelli, making it the first ever Hyper Horology timepiece crafted with the motorsport tyre rubber, and interchangeable straps that feature rubber inlays … but that’s not the only thing that’s interchangeable!
Taking inspiration from the Pit Stop, where every single part from the motorsport cars tyres, car body, rims, nose, and virtually every part of the car, is interchangeable, the crown and bezel, in addition to the strap of the Excalibur Spider Pirelli, can be swapped out with a single click, making the transformative timepiece a first of its kind, at will, to suit your whims, fancies, and moods, with the Quick Release System on these parts. With its 3 additional Limited Edition kits in red, white, or blue – 88 kits each, of which are iconic Pirelli colour codes and the Pirelli Cinturato™ Intermediate pattern on the inner design of the strap – you can customise your watch on your own. Oh, and if you have all 3 colours, you can actually play with the colours, and do some colour-blocking, perhaps a blue bezel and strap, but with a red crown? Or you could even do blue on one side of the strap with red on the other side, with a blue bezel and white crown! Frankly, that’s something we would do, because it not just adds a nice pop of colour, but also a fun element to your wristwatch.
Despite the Pirelli touches including the Pirelli logo on the transparent sapphire crystal caseback, the timepiece is still distinctively a Roger Dubuis piece. This 45mm watch is equipped a 60 hour power reserve, and fitted with the Maison’s first automatic skeleton, with its self-winding movement held on the iconic Roger Dubuis star. Made of DLC (diamond-like carbon) Titanium, it acts as the perfect balance of the weight required to wind the RD820SQ. A meticulous and painstaking endeavour, hundreds of hours are required to create this exceptional timepiece, with a third of this time dedicated to the prestigious Poinçon de Genève, as all the components are finished by hand by the fine watchmaking artisans at the Manufacture, because just like how it is in motorsports, team effort is key, and precision is EVERYTHING.
