Watches Wednesday: Jaeger-LeCoultre Métiers Rares Reverso One Cordonnet Jewellery

Jaeger-LeCoultre‘s iconic Reverso, which made its debut in 1931, is no stranger to the world fine watchmaking. Its Art Deco aesthetic have made it a favourite for both men and women alike, especially amongst the polo players thanks to its double-sided case. From Limited Edition collaborations to hand-painted enamelled pieces by the Atelier des Métiers Rares®, the Reverso has, since its inception, been reimagined in a multitude of ways.

For 2021, the Métiers Rares® division of the Maison is back with yet another exceptional jewellery creation, the Reverso One Cordonnet Jewellerywhich unites the artistry of its gem-setters, with the mastery of watchmaking complications. The result? An excecptionally glamorous women’s timepiece which doubles up as a fine jewellery bracelet. This particular timepiece takes inspiration from he 1930s, recalling the design of the simple black cord that were was used on luxury timepieces — the “little black dress” of watch bracelets which transitions seamlessly from day to night. The Reverso, too was one of them, and the term “cordonnet” (translation: fine braid) was used to refer to such watches.. I can certainly attest to this fact, because my grandmother, too had several of these pieces, which my mum inherited.

This year, the Reverso One Cordonnet Jewellery is a reinterpretation of the black cord strap, except a lot more decorative. The Maison have turned the simple cord into a supple braid of gold and diamonds, and a fully diamond-set Duetto case to complement the magnificent timepiece. And, like any other Reverso timepiece, its manually-wound Calibre 844 allows both hands to be turned simultaneously in opposite directions on each dial, thereby allowing 2 different timezones to be displayed.

The front dial is constructed of multiple layers. Here, you’d find golden Arabic numerals applied to a white mother-of-pearl bas and framed by diamond-set right-angled brackets, and its centre framed by a fine filet of gold. A geometric cut-out also reveals a glittering field of pavé set diamonds, on which the hands rest. On its reverse side, the dial is set on a background of onyx, with diamond-set golden “sunbeams” which form the hour markers. With the play of black and white, its difference is as stark as night as day, but nevertheless, both dials are equally exquisite. The entire watch, set with 1,104 diamonds in grain setting technique for a seamless appearance, weighs in at an impressive  7.84 carats in total.

With the Reverso One Cordonnet, you could wear it as a dress watch, as a piece of art, or as a precious bracelet. Whatever you choose to do, it it would certainly rest stunningly on your wrist.
