Watches Wednesday: Cartier Introduces New Additions to the Santos de Cartier Family

Welcome to another edition of Watches Wednesday! As promised, here are some of Cartier’s new introductions for 2019, which made its debut at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva earlier this year.

Cartier takes inspiration from its iconic Santos de Cartier timepieces, to create the new Santos-Dumont: a new collection that also bears the same square dial with intentionally visible screws.

Cartier SIHH 2019 Santos Dumont

Encased in either gold, gold and steel or all steel, the Santos-Dumont, like its predecessor, also features Roman numerals. What’s different, is its beaded winding crown and blue cabochon, and most noticeably, its slimmer casing thus making it not just more lightweight, but also a great unisex dress watch to go with your suit, tux, or even cocktail dress. But, because it comes with an ultra-slim casing, it’s inevitable that it comes with a quartz movement. Now, the upside to this, is that Cartier has developed a high-autonomy quartz movement, by resizing and reworking the movement to reduce energy consumption, along with a high-performance battery. Together, this will give you a battery life of approximately six years – twice as long as traditional movements.

But, for someone who prefers something with automatic movement, then there’s the Santos de Cartier Chronograph equipped with the 1904-CH MC Cartier Manufacture movement, you’d find the single start/stop push button at 9 o’clock, with the reset function directly integrated into the crown, once again making it more lightweight. With choice of straps available in either steel, alligator, rubber, or leather, all bracelet links come with the QuickSwitch system, with its patented tool-free SmartLink size adjustment system so you can easily shorten or lengthen to the bracelet to fit your wrist, without having to go to the boutique. My favourite is the ADLC (Almost Diamond Light Carbon) version, which also comes with an additional leather or bracelet strap of your choice that retails for MYR 34,000.

If you follow us on Instagram @bagaddictsanon, you’d probably have remembered us posting on our IG Stories, about this beauty right here when we went to the Cartier boutique to check out Cartier’s SIHH 2019 offerings last month: the Santos de Cartier Skeleton Noctambule Watch. Those of you who are regular readers right here wouldn’t be surprised at all,  because you already know how much I love skeleton watches. This special timepiece right here was inspired by Alberto Santos-Dumont’s penchant for night flights, and we all know how difficult it is to tell the time in the dark, don’t we? Well, that’s why the bridges on this darling watch are coated with Super-LumiNova® pigments on the Roman numerals which seemingly appear as if they’re floating in the air, or rather, within the watch’s case when worn on the wrist. Invisible during daytime, all you need is a hint of low-light to set the bridges aglow. Now, how easy would it be to tell the time when night falls, or in the cinema when you have this arm candy on your wrist? 😉 LOVE.
