Watches Wednesday: Audemas Piguet’s Carolina Bucci Limited Edition Royal Oak Frosted Gold
Phew, now that Fashion Week coverage is all done, it’s back to normal programming right here on Bag Addicts Anonymous. In today’s edition of Watches Wednesday, we have the Audemars Piguet Limited Edition Royal Oak Frosted Gold, developed in collaboration with Italian jewellery designer, Carolina Bucci, for the second time.
The brand’s first partnership with Bucci dates back to 2016, when she designed the Frosted Gold in both white gold, and pink gold in 33 and 37mm, to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the Royal Oak for women. For this year’s Limited Edition model, Bucci has designed a 37mm Frosted Yellow Gold version of the Royal Oak utilising the same ancient gold hammering technique used in fine jewellery making to give the timepiece a textured, yet sparkly casing and strap. But, this time around, she replaces the trademark grid-like Tapisserie dial with a shiny, silver-toned mirror. Oh and, to go with this special dial, she also designed a mirrored box with a Frosted Gold AP insignia to complement this special Limited Edition beauty.
With the first Frosted Gold design, I took the perfection of the Royal Oak case and bracelet and ‘roughed them up’ a little, juxtaposing the perfectly imperfect Florentine finish with Swiss watchmaking precision. Now I’m doing the opposite, taking the textured surface of the “Tapisserie” dial and flattening it out into a perfectly smooth mirror. The motive for both is to create something interesting and unpredictable. It’s a fresh take on on icon made in the image of a contemporary woman. I know women with a great eye for keynote accessories who are going to love this. The mirror is always interacting with the environment, ever-changing according to what clothes you’re wearing, the décor of the room, the lighting, the time of day, the weather ~ Carolina Bucci ~
She certainly got this right. The mirrored dial isn’t something that we usually see on luxury timepieces, thus scoring points on not just novelty, but uniqueness! Besides “interacting with the environment”, it’s also a great way to discreetly check if your makeup needs to be touched up, or if you’ve got anything stuck between your teeth when you’re out on a date or at an important event, don’t you think? 😉
