What an unexpected collaboration this is, to have Loewe collaborate with renowned Japanese film studio, Studio Ghibli, on a My Neighbour Totoro (or just, affectionately known as Totoro to fans) Capsule. Released in 1988, My Neighbour Totoro is an animated feature film by Hayao Miyazaki (also the brainchild behind other masterpieces including Sprited Away, Princess Mononoke [our fave, especially the soundtrack!], Howl’s Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, and many others). Totoro is a tale about Mei and Satuski, and the friendship they forged with a magical creature named Totoro. The result is a Capsule comprising men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, leather goods, and accessories.

So why this particular collaboration and why Totoro? Well, that’s because Creative Director Jonathan Anderson felt that in this unprecedented time, “there is a natural longing for heartwarming feelings right now” and also a need for finding ways to live harmoniously in the current pandemic. It also serves a reminder that such connection between humans, nature, and the world at large, exists – a rather alien concept to us right now during this turbulent time governed by social distancing and SOPs.

The message is one of dreamy serenity and hands-on creativity – of being at one with nature and with one’s own inner child – which is especially important right now and, I think, always will be ~ Jonathan Anderson ~

And so, we are transported into a magical alternate universe featuring the iconic characters from the feature animated film, at home in their fantasy landscapes as prints, allover prints, jacquard intarsia, and of course, the intarsia technique on leather marquetry – something which Loewe is known for. You’d find unisex relaxed fit hoodies, tees, jumpers, sweaters, culottes and biker jackets, as well as tote bags, the classic Puzzle, Balloon and Hammock bags, alongside SLGs including pouches, wallets, and cases.
