Toosday Shoesday: Gucci Tennis 1977 Sneaker
Cruise 2020, for Creative Director Alessandro Michele, is all about delving deep into Gucci‘s archives. You’ve seen the 1955 Horsebit Bag, and today, it’s all about the Tennis 1977 sneaker, which inspired his new reinterpretation of it. Originally, the low-top sneaker came in canvas combinations and prints, with a white rubber sole that had a green outline. For Cruise 2020, Michele has resuscitated the sneaker, and refreshed it as a unisex sneaker in 7 different styles: three of which are plain-coloured ones in black and turquoise for men, and butter for both men and women in a distressed tweed fabric with green trims; 3 cotton piquet fabric versions featuring the all-over GG web motif; and another featuring Mickey Mouse on a brown cotton base with mini GG motif.
As homage to the original sneaker, Michele has included a Gucci Tennis 1977 label on both the insole and the tongue, the House Web stripe in green-red-green or blue-red-blue on the sides, as well as a textured GG motif on the bumper and outsole.
