Louis Vuitton Men’s Spring/Summer 19 Runway & Bags Report

It was OFF-WHITE founder Virgil Abloh‘s debut collection for Louis Vuitton, and in a pre-show interview at the Maison’s headquarters, he said that the inspiration behind the collection came from the idea of “white light hitting a prism, and dividing into its component colours”. This perhaps explains why he began the show with an entire series of sharp, tailored, all-white looks. After this, it was all about beiges, greys neon, red, blue, purple, and black, with a hint of denim-on-denim, and tie-dye, florals, and finally, a metallic silver poncho for the closing look.

Apart from his tailored streamlined looks, there was also some sportswear thrown into the mix, as the saw protective zippered vests, holsters, and harnesses, that came with several zippered patch pockets as though he’d sewn SLGs of various sizes, onto them, thus giving it a utilitarian sorta vibe.

His other inspiration seem to have come from The Wizard of Oz, with Dorothy, the protagonist, lying in a bed of roses. The closing look, being the metallic silver poncho, too, and “Follow the Yellow Brick” written on a breast patch,  which was not coincidentally, styled with a pair of brick-printed pants. With all that silver, could this be Abloh’s version of the Tin Man perhaps?

Where the bags are concerned, Abloh ressurected some of Vuitton’s archival pieces – the Steamer, Papillon –  with his own twist with both crossbody straps and chainlink straps dangling off them. Most of the bags were in monochrome including the hardware, or contrast coloured trims and hardware. The Speedy and Keepall, too, featured quite heavily in the collection, with versions in tonal leather, transparent perspex, and holographic leather with an iridescent cellophane effect.

The Verdict: I’m really liking all the tailored looks that Abloh came up with for the Men’s Spring/Summer 19 collection. In fact, it was rather surprising to say the least, because Abloh is usually known for his streetwear aesthetic, so this more polished vibe was certainly certainly unexpected. That said, it really goes to show that, though he wasn’t formally trained with a background in fashion design, he isn’t any less talented.

In terms of the bags, I’m really digging the Papillon-inspired one, and though from the men’s collection, it’s something that I’d actually rock it myself. I also love the black Speedy with fluorescent hardware and trims because of the pops of neon, because as you know, I adore brights. ‘Nuff said. 😉
