Gucci Men’s Spring/Summer 17 Runway and Bags Report

For Gucci’s Men’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection,  Creative Director Alessandro Michele gets inspired by the idea of traveller. This season, Michele bases the collection around Italian scholar Claudio Magris’s philosophy, who takes the traveller as “an archaeologist through different layers of reality, to read even the hidden signs under other signs, to collect as many existences and stories as possible, and save them from the flow of time and from the erasing wave of oblivion”. In short, the voyager embarks on a journey of self-exploration, collecting and storing memories and “stories”along the way; all of which, through time, become imbued with nostalgia in some way or other. This, then, resonates with Michele’s own philosophy, which, as we have seen in all of his collections for Gucci thus far, seems to always be about the putting together of disparate signs. This way, with the old imbued with the new, allows us to create new meanings.

Perhaps this idea of melding different worlds together. The Men’s SS17 collection was part preppy with the schoolboy blazers reminiscent of boarding school uniforms, yet also had traces of the luxe sportswear with the embroidered silk/satin jackets; a unification of both the East and the West with the Chinese-styled buttons and motifs from ancient Chinese folklore, but yet sneaking Donald Duck in some of these motifs if you look closely enough and then pairing all this with a bow tie and cummerbund; and also the Modern (“Modern Future”tees and slogans) and the Retro.

Since the collection was all about the traveller, the Men’s SS17 bags, with an abundance of oversized duffel bags would serve as great overnighters, and some backpacks decorated with embroidered patches certainly reflected this wanderlusting spirit.
