All You Need To Know About the Hermès Kelly Bag Family + Sizes!

Aside from the Birkin, the Kelly is yet another Hermès Holy Grail bag which is equally as difficult to score. Today, we shine the spotlight on not just the iconic Kelly, but also other bags from the family, such as the Kelly Lakis, Kelly Danse, So Kelly, and the Kelly Ado Backpack.

Kelly

Created by Robert Dumas in the 1930s, who was also responsible for creating women’s bags with straps, he designed a structured bag with two triangular gussets at the side, a cutout flap, top handle, and 2 side straps. It only became referred to, and renamed the Kelly in the late-1950s after then Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, was photographed with this Dumas creation to hide her baby bump. Since then, the Kelly has grown into an entire extended family of bags, as well as accessories and watches.

Size-wise, the Kelly comes in an array of sizes, ranging from mini to oversized (for work and travel).

Kelly 15 15 x 11 x 5 cm
Kelly 20 20 x 16 x 10 cm
Kelly 25 25 x 19 x 9 cm
Kelly 28 28 x 22 10 cm
Kelly 32 32 x 23 x 10.5 cm
Kelly 35 35 x 24 x 12 cm
Kelly 40 40 x 28 x 16 cm
Kelly 50 50 x 34 x 25 cm

Kelly Lakis

Perhaps not a bag that we see often because this is even harder to score than the Kelly, (believe us, we’ve tried!), is its sportier sister the Kelly Lakis. Oh, and it also takes much longer to make than the regular Kelly. But, if you’re an Hermès regular, you can request for this to be made as a Special Order.

So, what’s the difference between the two, and how can you tell them apart?  Easy! This iteration of the Kelly comes with 2 front zipped pockets below the flap, as well as a larger zipped pocket across the back, that spans the entire width of the bag. Previously available in Box or canvas with leather trims, the Kelly Lakis is now only available in Swift leather. You can opt for the matching leather strap, or the sportier and more casual canvas strap.

Kelly Danse

The orange fairies have recently re-released the Kelly Danse in Fall 2019 with the return of the belt bag/bum bag/fanny pack. The Kelly Danse, as many would say, is a close cousin to the Kelly Pochette due to its size, though a little larger and taller. I’d say this is the most versatile bag from the Kelly family to date, because you’re literally getting 3 Hermès bags for the price of 1 – it can be used as a belt bag, a shoulder bag (if you don’t mind it leaning forward ever so slightly because of the way the straps are positioned when worn this way as the loops for the strap are on the back of the bag), a crossbody bag, and even converted into a backpack!

Dimensions: 22 x 17 x 6 cm, with an adjustable shoulder strap from 58cm-70cm

So Kelly

A slightly less popular style, the So Kelly is Hermès’s version of a Kelly-styled bucket/hobo bag with the iconic Kelly Turlock closure. Introduced in the Fall/Winter 2008 collection, the So Kelly is larger than the usual bucket-styled bag, it can be worn on the shoulder or as a messenger bag. An easy casual day bag cum travel bag which would be roomy enough for your travels if you’re taking this on the plane with you, it’s super comfortable to carry because it lays flat against your body. Though the shoulder strap is completely detachable, it really doesn’t make sense to carry it as a clutch without the strap. Oh and if you have this, we recommend that you keep it fastened always, or else it’ll look a tad awkward unfastened. The So Kelly is available in 2 sizes, in Togo, Clemence, Fjord, and Matte Niloticus Crocodile.

So Kelly 26 26 x 35 x 13 cm

Kelly Ado

The Kelly Ado is a backpack style from the Kelly family. Designed by Rena Dumas, the Kelly Ado was first launched in 1996, and came in 2 variations: a larger style with the top handle (26cm), and a smaller one (22cm), without. Hermès then discontinued this style, but then brought it back in 2018, calling it the Kelly Ado IIThis time around, the it only comes in one size. It maintains slouchier Retourné construction of the original, and has been slightly modified with the addition of a pocket for your smartphone. Where straps are concerned, you can choose between wooly webbing, or full leather.

Dimensions: 22.86  x 21 x 9 cm

If you’re looking for other Kelly models such as the Kelly Cut, Kelly Longue, Kelly Pochette, Kelly To-Go and other such clutches or WOCs, stay tuned because they’ll be coming up soon!
