Newsflash: Riccardo Tisci Replaces Christopher Bailey at Burberry

First, it was news of Hedi Slimane heading over to Céline that rocked the fashion world, and now, yet another unexpected announcement during Paris Fashion Week: Effective March 12, Riccardo Tisci will be replacing Christopher Bailey as Chief Creative Officer at Burberry.

Burberry’s chief executive Marco Gobetti comments,

Riccardo is one of the most talented designers of our time. His designs have an elegance that is contemporary and his skill in blending streetwear with high fashion is highly relevant to today’s luxury consumer. Riccardo’s creative vision will reinforce the ambitions we have for Burberry and position the brand firmly in luxury

Similarly, Tisci enthuses,

I am honoured and delighted to be joining Burberry and reuniting with Marco Gobbetti. I have an enormous respect for Burberry’s British heritage and global appeal and I am excited about the potential of this exceptional brand.

Ok with all this said and done and with yet another “designer musical chairs mystery” solved, there’s still a big question that’s swirling around in my mind right now… Since Burberry doesn’t have a Couture collection, would Tisci find his creativity stifled because he’s so used to creating beautiful couture pieces for Givenchy? Hmm…
