Newsflash: Christopher Bailey To Leave Burberry!

Burberry President and Chief Creative Officer, Christopher Bailey, will be leaving the brand at the end of 2018 after 17 years at the creative helm.. He will continue to serve on the board until 31 March 2018, and will continue to provide support for new CEO Marco Gobbetti (formerly from Céline) until 31 December 2018.

Since he was appointed, Bailey was the person who was responsible for embracing technological and digital innovations and incorporating them into the British brand’s business model, beginning with the Runway 2 Reality service that served as a precursor to “see-now-buy-now”, making Burberry the brand that was at the forefront of digital sales and marketing. Thanks to Bailey, Burberry was also one of the very first brands to utilise social media in an original way –  I still remember how he introduced the use of Snapchat to provide a behind-the-scenes look of a campaign shoot with Mario Testino, Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss for the My Burberry fragrance.

When asked about his departure, Bailey comments,

“It has been the great privilege of my life to be at Burberry, working alongside and learning from such an extraordinary group of people over the last 17 years. Burberry encapsulates so much of what is great about Britain. As an organization, it is creative, innovative and outward looking. I do truly believe, however, that Burberry’s best days are still ahead of her, and that the company will go from strength to strength with the strategy we have developed and the exceptional talent we have in place led by Marco. I am excited to pursue new creative projects, but remain fully committed to the future success of this magnificent brand and to ensuring a smooth transition.”

There isn’t news as yet about how Bailey’s successor will be. And so begins another round of designer musical chairs.
