Prada Cruise 2019 Runway Report

Last week, Prada held its Cruise 2019 runway show at The Piano Factory in New York. The former piano factory, recently converted into Prada’s NYC Headquarters with a naked concrete structure in 2000, by Herzog & de Meuron. This served as the perfect show venue, because after all, what could be better than the House’s own building?

Staged on level 7 of The Piano Factory, this is somewhat a continuation, at least in terms of the conceptualisation of the show venue. Remember the recent Fall/Winter 18 showspace at the Fondazione Prada complex in Milan, at a somewhat incomplete tower at the location? But, unlike the neon signs, the Cruise 19 showspace had panels arranged in an artful manner, to either allow or block out the daylight coming from outside. Artificial lights were also used to enhance the reflection and transparency, particularly the use colours commonly associated with sunset – red and black – against a dark silver backdrop. To further simulate the idea of sunset, red panels and lighting systems were also installed onto the windows to create an atmosphere of an “augmented sunset”.  Virtual cityscapes were also projected onto large floating panels, thus blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, and analogical and virtual realities.

As for the collection, it was a melting pot of prints and low-waisted kick flares with belts (which would look right at home in the TV sitcom That 70s Show; and then there were also ruffles and athleisure vibes thanks to the sport mesh, polos and jerseys; along with Prada logos displayed prominently, even on the sequinned evening looks. The most unexpected combinations, for me, were certainly the ankle-length skirts and slip dress that were paired with bulky tailored coats and bulbous, oversized pilot hats.
