#PFW: Miu Miu FW18 Runway & Bags Report
Miu Miu’s Fall/Winter 18 show space was decorated with Sheets of papers that seemed to be torn out from an illustrator’s sketchbook with a female character drawn with a marker pen, representing each letter of the alphabet, hanging from the ceiling. This didn’t really come as a surprise, because, apart from Maria Grazia Chiuri, Miuccia Prada is also an advocate of the women’s movements. Because of this, her collections have always offered different ways in which femininity may be perceived through sartorial representations, often through the juxtapositions between the “working girl”, and one who also embraces her sex appeal wholeheartedly. For Fall/Winter 2018, we see yet another version of the Miu Miu girl: one with slick, yet at the same time, messy bouffant hairstyles, and dramatic eyeliner reminiscent of a female rockstar.
Elle Fanning is clearly Miuccia’s favourite girl of the moment, as she not only opened the show, but also closed the show, and led the rest of the girl pack for the finale. Edie Campbell, Georgia May Jagger, Adwoa Aboah and current “it girl” Kaia Gerber, too, took turns down the runway.
In terms of the looks, what really stood out, were the high-waisted elasticated waistbands, double belts, each of which came with bulky buckles, chunky chain necklaces, vintage-washed denim, tweed, houndstooth, pencil skirts, and oh, lots of pastel leather. Or well, knowing Miuccia, it could also actually be faux leather, because she tends to like pulling these sorts of stunts to make a statement about the whole concept of “faux vs real”…
As for the FW18 runway bags, I think we’ve pretty much gotten used to seeing just one type of bag when it comes t Miu Miu. Miuccia first tried this bold move with the “My Miu” bag for FW17 runway, and this season, it’s all about this small turnlock flap bag, which comes in a myriad of colours, leathers, and textures: patent, tweed, patent and snakeskin, sequinned, matelasse, embellished, and the list goes on.
