#PFW: Chanel Spring/Summer 19 Runway & Bags Report

Forget real beaches, rockets, supermarkets, or waterfalls and the construction of extravagant show. This  time, Karl gave us a a tropical paradise, a backdrop which was printed and installed into the Grand Palais, and complete with a “bridge”, “huts”, and fake waves, for the Chanel Spring/Summer 19 show set.

Models walked barefoot on the sand, some of whom holding their shoes in their hand as one usually would, when strolling along the beach. Silhouettes were boxier, and tended to be oversized, especially the button-up shirts, and blazers. Pockets, too, seemed to be a point of emphasis in the collection. Karl also played up the era of Logomania with CHANEL emblazoned on the jewellery, two-piece sets, belts, caps, and shirt pockets. Sundresses were given an embroidered motif, which, looked a little abstract, or honeycomb-like, sorta like those optical illusion games, but I guess they could also be interpreted as an artsy-fartsy version of the camellia. In short, the collection was relaxed, carefree, with an element of sportswear thrown into the mix. As a whole, there was that unmistakable air of French je n’ais sais quoi.

Bags were often worn two at a time, crossbody-style, with one on either side of the body. New for the season, is a sort of fastener that came with a turnlock clasp on the interlocking Cs, for you to fuse the 2 bags together, should you want to wear both at once. Flap bags formed a big part of the collection, along with CHA-NEL flat pouches that came with wrist straps, as well as beach totes. The Vanity Bag was also made an appearance, in bi-coloured wicker. But, the bags that I look forward to seeing every season, would definitely be the seasonal novelty bags. And, since it’s all beach-themed, it isn’t a surprise that we see a beach ball and  white scallop shell minaudières.

The Verdict: Love the swimwear and the sundresses, but my absolute faves were certainly the black-and-white looks with the oversized knotted detail. Bags-wise, though, I really wasn’t blown away by anything, this season.
