#MFW: Moschino’s FW18 Runway Report
Jeremy Scott took us back to the 60s for Moschino’s Fall/Winter 2018 collection. When Kaia Gerber opened the show, it seemed as if Scott took inspiration by flight attendants’ uniforms at first, but after a few looks, it became apparent that the collection was modelled after Jackie O. With the pillbox hats, tone-on-tone skirt suits, gloves, and the most distinctive element of all, the then First Lady’s trademark hairstyle, it really couldn’t be mistaken for anything else. Sure, there were a couple of models sprayed in fluorescent shades of neon orange, yellow, aqua, and green (hello, Elphaba from Wicked!), but it was a rather “tame” and “restrained” collection for Scott’s standards.
Unlike the previous Moschino shows, Scott changed up the format. This time around, there wasn’t any “Second Act”. Instead, he followed the more “standard formula” of runway shows which finished with evening looks. Despite changing the show format, Scott still kept to his Capsule Collection for the season. In between the Jackie O clones that strutted down the runway, we saw a couple of printed pieces with Pop Art-esque and vintage comic-like crying female faces that we saw on the fashion show invite, created in collaboration with artist Ben Frost. Some of these pieces were used to created a mish-mash, with the faces printed over several advertising images and packaging from past Moschino collections. Those that really stood out, were the Fresh (the one with the spray bottle) along with the candy and cereal packaging, that I’m sure we all remember.
For evening, jumpsuits and floor-length sequinned evening dresses were combined with satin in pastel shades. The result? A rather sweet confection that, at the same time, exuded a rather Glam Rock-esque vibe (think: Bowie) thanks to the silver sequins and angular ways in which the material was cut. Oh, and the final closing look worn by Gigi Hadid was truly stunning. MAJOR LOVE.
