#MFW: Moschino FW17 Runway and Bags Report

We’ve all heard the phrase “Waste Not, Want Not” at least once in our lifetime but with Jeremy Scott’s latest Fall/Winter 17 collection for Moschino, the subtext seems to be “Turn Waste into Fashion and Couture!” Yup, recycling seemed to be the theme of the day for Scott.

The runway was made to look like cardboard boxes that were flattened out and pieced together by packing/masking tape, and with this, it set the stage for the first part of his collection. His opening looks included two-piece skirt and pant suits complete with a cardboard box which he turned into a fascinator of sorts, pea coats, and cardboard box-like bags that looked worn and crumpled, yet still held its shape, decorated with the usual shipping and packaging stickers like “This Way Up”, “Do Not Crush”, and “Fragile”.

With the dresses and bags made up of a collage of brand logos and torn out Moschino pages of fashion editorials,  the second theme made for a colourful middle section of the show in comparison to an otherwise tone-on-tone first act.

Then came the evening looks, with party dresses and ball gowns made of domestic waste such as velvet tasseled curtains, black rubber gloves, dry-cleaning plastic packaging, shower curtains, candelabras, Moschino paper bags that held together by duct tape, toilet roll, bubble wrap, kitchen waste products like paper towels, Kleenex boxes, random food boxes and plastic bags, a bicycle tyre as headgear, and even trash bin covers as hats that would make Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street, proud.

As with any Moschino collection, Scott always has several themes but his genius lies in the way is still be able to tie these seemingly disparate standalone themes, together.  His tongue-in-cheek approach always has a dual function: as social commentary and to remind us not to take fashion too seriously, and to always have fun with it.
