Louis Vuitton Cruise 19 Runway & Bags Report
By now, we’re probably already familiar with Louis Vuitton Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière’s penchant for art museums for Cruise shows. This time around, he took to the French Riviera, specifically the Fonfdation Maeght, a museum of modern art in Saint-Paul de Vence.
For Cruise 2019, it was all about sparkle, sequins, beading, stripes, prints, and an extensive colour palette from whites, blacks, and earthy beige and peachy tones, to pastels, burnt orange, and vibrant jewel tones. And then, there were jackets that were entirely covered in sequins, and another with a sequinned/beaded motif on the back that glittered and sparkled, that gave us that flamboyant 80s glam rock vibe. Feathers, too, (regardless whether made of actual feathers or multicoloured feather-shaped paillettes dangling from clothing and swaying away), featured prominently on the evening looks. Oh and there was also print on print on print. which certainly reflects the artsy vibes of this modern art museum’s venue. This season’s Archlight sneaker morphed into an over-the-knee sneaker-boots hybrid (sans laces), and accessories include eyewear that seemed to be inspired by lab goggles.
But, for me, the highlight of the collection, was certainly the bags, particularly those developed in collaboration with former American Vogue Creative Director, Grace Coddington featuring her cutesy illustrations of her beloved cats, and his dog. And while there were cats and dogs printed onto monogram canvas bags, the standout bags from this Capsule are definitely the ones that were actually cat- and dog-shaped.
These remind me of his earlier collab with the ginger-haired Coddington — remember the limited edition Balenciaga bag featuring her cat Pumpkin, back in 2012 for Fashion’s Night Out shortly before Ghesquière’s departure prior to joining Vuitton?
And then with the latest highly sought after Neo Noé bag that’s currently in stores, Ghesquière also introduces a new bucket bag, along with a monogrammed shoulder bag in monogram canvas, but this time, without vachetta.
Though I’m no cat person, my favourite part of the collection has to be the Grace Coddington Capsule in its entirety, including the cat charm! I’m sure the pieces from this capsule are going to be super popular, especially for Coddington fans, and cat lovers in general!
