#LFW: Burberry’s February 2018 Collection Runway & Bags Report

The February 2018 Collection was Christopher Bailey‘s swan song for Burberry, and man it was something really different, unlike what we have been accustomed to expecting from him. The show space was dimly lit, and there wasn’t a live performance of any sort either. Instead, the soundtrack to the show included songs like “Don’t Leave Me This Way” as the closing number.

A flash of a rainbow motif on the skirt of the opening look spotted on Adwoah Aboah. Several looks later, with the incorporation of rainbows in many forms, be it on the tartan, hats, sneakers, or the outerwear, it became clear that it was Bailey’s form of a Pride Parade. There were also some “Burberry of London” logo sweatshirts and logo tees that are all the rage at the moment, ala the Balenciaga and Gucci ones that have been flying off the shelves. Tartan kilts too, were spotted on the men. Yet another thing I noticed was that everything seemed to be oversized, especially the skirts, which were ultra voluminous, and the outerwear, with overly-long sleeves. Carla Delevingne then closed the show with a floor-length shearling rainbow cloak smiling, and swinging it around, in the way one would wave a flag, and in this case, a Pride flag. During the finale, a holographic display in all colours of the rainbow creating creating a triangular “roof” formation, through which the models walked.

The bags, too consisted of a small saddle-shaped shoulder bag called the “Link Bag”, that came in patent leather, as well as the House’s 1983 check prints.  And then there was a bag that resembled a “plastic bag”, that can also be worn crossbody style. This particular plastic bag really reminded me of Céline’s clear plastic bag tote (which you will be seeing in an upcoming post). My favourite, however, was the belted leather tote, which could also work as a unisex bag!

What a way this was that Bailey chose to bid adieu after 17 years at the helm. He called this collection Time, saying that it was all about the “past, present, and future” of Burberry, and in many ways, it was: he brought back the 1983 House Check prints, continued with the present in terms of his use of tartan, which is a spillover or rather, continuation, of the September 2017 collection and what’s currently in stores right now, and as for Burberry’s post-Bailey future, well I suppose this remains to be seen…
