Bottega Veneta Cruise 19 Runway & Bags Report
With all the “see now buy now” that’s going on in the fashion world, Bottega Veneta Creative Director Tomas Maier has designed a three-part collection.
One delivers in November, one in December and one in January. Each one is about what my client might need or want at the time when pieces arrive in the store
For the first group, expect to find a spillover of the House’s Fall/Winter 18 runway collection women‘s collection, reflected especially in its colour palette of deep orange, marigold yellow, and Baccara rose. This group is all about voluminous proportions: Oversized Duffle coats, jackets, chunky knits, cropped jackets, and knee-high boots for day, and pleated taffeta skirts and trapeze dresses for evening.
The second group is all about pastels, because Maier “wanted to offer the lightest colours for the darkest days of the year”. But if you’re thinking pastels are more of a spring thing, think again, because the pastels can be described as “icy”, thus reflecting the snowfall and wintry climates that you usually get, in December. Ivory-coloured lace, and parks are lined in teddy bear fur, whilst other coats also came with detachable teddy bear fur collars. Though, I have to say that my heart bled a little when it was revealed that they used Steiff teddy bears for the lining and collars, because I used to love these bears when I was little.
January is all about pre-spring vibes, and lots of prints, or rather, print-on-print-on-print, would more aptly describe this group. Maier showed favour towards the Prince of Wales check, and houndstooth, all actually formed by tiny dots, giving the idea of a part-pixelated, part-graphic wallpaper print from afar. This is maximalism at its best.
Where handbags are concerned, Maier introduces an “accessory to the accessory” — SLGs such as coin purses and rectangular mini wallets in Intrecciato Checker that are designed to slide onto slim belts or handbag straps. These teeny tiny accessories can also be attached to the Chain Knot. Move over bag charms, this is #nextlevel. New to the season, is the structured crossbody satchel for day. Maier also paid tribute to one of Bottega’s house codes, the butterfly, by way of the introduction of the first ever woman’s belt bag with a cravatteria motif made up of micro butterflies.
I really love how the circular coin purse, when added to the front of the saddle bag, transforms the bag in an instant, making look like a totally different bag altogether! Also, the “accessory to the accessory” add-ons are the perfect solution for bags that have few interior compartments, don’t you think?
