An Ode to Nicolas Ghesquière

An Ode to Nicolas Ghesquière

Two days ago (November 5th), and after 15 years as Creative Director, Nicolas Ghesquière announced that the Spring/Summer 2013 collection for Balenciaga which we just saw at Paris Fashion Week last month, was actually his swan song for the Maison.

When I first heard the news, I was in shock. I mean, we had just only settled the game of designer musical chairs after finally filling in the Creative Director positions at Saint Laurent Paris and Dior!
At this point, I’m really now beginning to regret that I didn’t get my hands (or, well, asked someone to do so on my behalf) on Grace Coddington’s “Pumpkin” bag for Balenciaga during Fashion’s Night Out just because she drew the cats wearing memorable Ghesquière pieces from the Balenciaga archives.

Nicolas has always been one of my most favourite designers (and will always be!) for the longest time now, and I really didn’t want him to give up his haute seat at Balenciaga. He had done wonders for the label (and I’m not just talking about the bags here!), always cutting-edge, daring to push and test the boundaries. Yet, he still manages to make everything look effortless, feminine, and most importantly, wearable. He was only in his mid-twenties when he took the helm at Balenciaga, but he nonetheless single-handedly managed to revive the brand, and claim a rightful spot on the fashion radar. Thanks to him, the brand rests comfortably smack in the middle along with the other A-list labels.

Sure,  I might not have liked some seasons as much as the others because he might have pushed things a little too far for my taste, but we’re only human. He certainly has learnt from those lessons, and bounced back stronger than ever before by delivering a smashing season after a previously lacklustre one. Despite all that’s been said and done, he has always been front and centre at the fashion forefront where he rightfully belongs.

Now, here’s a look at some of my favourites from the Balenciaga archives featuring Ghesquière’s designs during his 15-year tenure. Looking back, everything is still as relevant today as it was when it first debuted. His designs have certainly weathered the seasons.

Nicolas, the true incomparable visionary that you are, it is time that you are given your own label because you well and truly deserve it! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!
