Chanel’s Cruise 2016 FULL Fashion Show Video & Runway Report

Karl Lagerfeld took the Chanel Cruise 2016 show to Seoul this week. Held at Dongdaemun Design Plaza designed by world renowned architect Zaha Hadid, the Cruise 16 collection was all about the K-Pop influence, which Karl described as a “modern vision of the pop art scene”.  The vibrant colours were not only reflected on the clothes, but also on the white runway with meandering colourful polka dots which resembled a Ludo game of sorts, on which the models walked. The show space, too was filled with gum drop pastille-esque stools.

The runway collection featured colourful summer dresses and skirts, with lots of kaleidoscopic prints, stripes, geometric motifs, and of course, polka dots. Silhouettes were kept loose and at times even voluminous. The multicoloured stripe details were definitely reflective of the Korean women’s traditional dress, the han bok. Instead of the Camelia which Chanel is known for, this had morphed into the flower either as embellishment or motif that was reminiscent of the ceremonial headdresses and embroidered flowers on traditional Korean costumes. I also believe that, it’s perhaps the first time in Chanel history where the collection felt  playful, fun, and whimsical, rather than elegant and polished. I don’t know, but it seemed that Chanel became much much younger in their design aesthetic: It was a combination of everything – the music, the show space, and the clothes that came down the runway  – the look, style, and feel was rather uncharacteristic of the Maison. And I’m not saying that it’s because of Karl’s unapologetic use of colour. If anything, Chanel’s SS14 “art gallery” runway show was filled with colour, but yet never exuded this vibe.  As for my verdict, there were quite a few pieces I liked, but this Cruise 16 collection feels like a collection that I can definitely imagine on quirky Susie Bubble !

Now, here’s what Karl had to say about the Cruise 16 collection that he designed:

Oh, and did you recognise the little boy walking the Cruise 16 runway? If you did, that’s because he starred alongside Cara Delevingne and Pharrell Williams in the latest Pre-Fall 15 advertising campaign!

Do YOU prefer Chanel quirky and fun, or elegant and timeless?
