Fad Or Cult Classic: Céline Luggage Tote

Since its debut in 2010, the Céline Luggage Tote has taken the fashion world by storm, all thanks to Phoebe Philo, the brand’s creative director. Philo has the knack of turning around brands that are slipping under the radar – she revived Chloé with the introduction of the Paddington bag (you know, the one with the oversized padlock) and has now done the same for Céline, which was previously dying a slow death after Michael Kors’ departure as creative director. Philo single-handedly restored Céline as an A-list designer label with the Luggage Tote (oft affectionately referred to as the Boston bag).

Initially intended to star as the It Bag of the season in which it was launched, the Luggage Tote instead caught the attention of the fashion glitterati and celebrities alike, and pretty soon, won the hearts of fashionistas the world over. The Luggage Tote family has grown since its introduction (it was available only in Medium when it debuted), and now has a few siblings and cousins that come in various sizes: Nano, Micro, Mini, Shoulder, and Phantom. This itself attests to its ever-increasing popularity, surpassing its status as an It Bag.

It’s in fact so covet-worthy that the Luggage Tote now has everyone worshipping at the temples of Céline, making these babies increasingly hard to get your hands on. Whether in most parts of Asia, Europe, UK or the US, it’s waiting list can go up to six months long, with more than 500 people on it at a time for specific colours. If you ever see Luggage Totes resting on shelves in the boutiques, rest assured you’ll only emerge disappointed because you will instead be asked to join the waitlist – they’re for display-only and not for sale.

However, us locals are in luck – the Spring/Summer 2012 editions of these arm candies are currently available at both the boutiques in Pavilion and Isetan @ The Gardens, coming in an assortment of solid hues like camel, or drool-worthy tri-colour combinations that come with suede side panels for the season.

If you’ve got an eye on a Luggage tote, be sure to act fast. I’ve got mine on the Luggage Phantom, which for the first time ever, is now available in canvas!

My verdict? I think the Luggage Tote is definitely a Cult Classic, much like the Cambridge Satchel due to its sheer ability to weather all seasons and occasions, despite maintaining its status as one of the most lust-worthy bags since it first appeared on the fashion radar two years ago.
