Fad Or Cult Classic: Prada’s Galleria Tote

Launched a little over year ago, Prada’s Galleria Tote (also known as the ‘Saffiano Lux Tote’ in America) is commonly misidentified by many as the ‘Prada Saffiano’. However, do take note that Saffiano doesn’t refer to the model but the material – to the type of grained, scratch-resistant textured leather. Even the wallets that are made from the same type of leather is identified as Saffiano, regardless of whether it’s by Prada or any other designer brand.

The Galleria is not just favoured by celebrities and models like Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Selena Gomez, Elle Macpherson and Miranda Kerr because I realise that I’m starting to see it more these days, wherever I go. Even though it’s relatively new, it is now considered as one of the brand’s classics and must-haves, akin to Chanel’s 2.55 and Classic Flap Bag .

Initially only available in matte Saffiano in just three sizes when it was first launched, you can now opt for either glossy or matte finished Saffiano and a total of five sizes – three smaller sizes that come with the cross-body strap, and two larger sizes (sans strap), which are perfect for the office. Owing to its mega success, the Galleria Tote now comes in myriad seasonal colours – along with three classic colours: red, black and caramel – and ranges from RM6600 to RM8800, depending on size.

Its popularity really owes much to its functionality and versatility because it works for almost any social environment and situation whether it’s meetings, the office, shopping, or a lunch date. I’d even go as far as to call it a bag for all occasions. Functional fashion, if you will. Its simplicity and elegance oozes a quiet sense of luxury, that isn’t at all show-offy and blatantly in-your-face.

So, if you ask me, it’s most certainly a Classic. In short, an icon and wardrobe staple that will remain timeless for years and even decades to come. What do YOU think?
