#MFW: Gucci Spring/Summer 17 Runway and Bags Report

The show space was aglow in scarlet with a mist so thick you could hardly see a few feet into the distance. With plush pink sofas, small shiny silver squares tiled along the walls as well as in a “curtain like effect” that divided up the show space areas, it felt every bit like a very boudoir-esque Studio 54. Eerie music and a poetry recitation served as the soundtrack to the show. This time around, no animals, insects, or snakes were in sight. Instead there were lots of sequins, tulle, metallic fringe, bedazzled disco geek glasses, and headgear. Everything was trippy, trippy, trippy.

That said, let’s move on to the bags!

If were looking for the Animal embroidered appliqué motifs and brass animal head details on the clasp in the usual Alessandro Michele fashion, you’d have seen them only on the bags for Spring/Summer 17. Among the usual suspects and ‘hot’ bags from the collections currently in store – the Marmont,  Dionysus Top Handle, and Sylvie – they come in brocade for the upcoming season. The now signature Dionysus comes with multiple decorative chain straps, and the chain shoulder strap has been replaced with a horsebit chain. And then there are the bags of the season, with phrases such as “Modern Future” and “Future” in gothic writing over metallic, and angular fonts, top handle Bamboo top handle bags with blunt rounded stud details (think thumb tack-like studs), and of course, in the classic GG coated jacquard fabric with embroidered appliqué patches.

My favourite from the collection would definitely have to be the new Dionysus with multiple chain straps and horsebit shoulder strap. Do you have a favourite? What do you think of the SS17 collection?
