The Return of the FENDI Baguette
You’ve seen the three #BaguetteFriendsForever videos shot in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and New York, featuring fashion influencers, as well as the star of them all in the final chapter, Sarah Jessica Parker. SJP’s role in the video is certainly befitting, because it was her line “it’s not a bag, it’s a baguette!” in Season 3 Episode 17 “What Goes Around Comes Around” (aired in 2000) in the hit TV series Sex and the City, that catapulted the FENDI Baguette to instant fame and glory.
Since its introduction in 1997, there have been over a thousand iterations of this handbag, including exclusive pieces, Limited Editions, customisable versions, and even collaborations with celebrities and artists which have been auctioned off for a good cause. At this point, you’re probably wondering what’s up with all these Baguette videos anyway, because the iconic bag has become a staple every season, with at least one Baguette in every collection. Well, I’ll tell you why – FENDI has embarked on a “Baguette Revival” of sorts, and has brought back this cult bag in a BIG way, declaring 2019 as the “year of the Baguette”. Yup, now you know why we saw a plethora of Baguette bags that ranged from denim and embroidered jacquard, to other variations featuring the FF logo embossed onto hyper soft leather in a delectable palette of pastel hues on FENDI’s Spring/Summer 2019 runway!
This season, the Baguette comes in 3 different sizes. Equipped with several card slots and a chain strap, the Mini is akin to a Wallet on Chain. The roomier Medium comes with a zippered pocket on its interior, and the Large, is an oversized version which would look great when worn messenger-style. Large it may be, but it still fits comfortably when tucked under the arm, and is a great bag to travel with if you’re someone who’s constantly on-the-go, because it could also double up as a pillow when you get tired, heh. Both the Medium and Large versions come with a longer additional leather strap that’s wider (yep, you don’t have to purchase them separately!), should you decide to carry them crossbody style.
My favourite from the collection would definitely have to be the Medium, in any of the pastel shades!
