London Fashion Week: Burberry Spring/Summer 2011

For the first time ever, in the history of fashion week, Burberry is one of the first brands to offer the public chance to purchase bags (and coats) from their new Spring/Summer 2011 collection for a limited time only. Place your pre-orders from now until September 29th 2010 and you’ll get your SS 2011 bags within 7 weeks!

Here’s the complete S/S2011 bag collection below:

Burberry opened the show with high-gloss patent acid-coloured sling bags and clutches, followed by pythons in spliced leathers and then came the bags with the crossover straps (something that Burberry has been doing for awhile now) along with patent leather strips against the signature house check (or novacheck) print.

The Verdict: I’ve never at all been a Burberry fan, but I must say that Christopher Bailey really surprised me (in a good way) with this vibrant and acid-coloured palette, which is a rather unconventional move for a brand like Burberry.

The SS2011 bags is basically a collection of patent bags with a some python thrown in. I’m not such a fan of anything in patent regardless of whether they’re shoes, belts or bags, simply because they’re not only fingerprint magnets, but also because of its tendency to get sticky and/or crack, particularly in our humid tropical climate.

In terms of size, As with most bags spotted on the runways thus far, were rather small (as can be seen from the above) and most of them are either sling/crossbody bags or clutches. Sling/crossbody bags have been in vogue since the beginning of this year, and is a trend that is likely to continue into next year, much like the studded trend that has been around for the past few season now. I guess I’m more of a tote bag person, so I’m not really feeling this sort of saddle-esque structured shapes (which is again a spillover trend from this year) and have never really understood why this is a trend, but I guess the apple of someone’s eye could be a poison arrow in another’s, so … *shrugs*.

As for the patent leather strip novacheck bags or what is being referred to above as the “house check stitched patent bag”, although a bold move for a brand with such heritage like Burberry, seems rather tacky. Perhaps the reason for my saying so is because I’m not a fan of the house check.

However, I’m loving the spliced python bags from the collection! And yes, that wouldn’t come off as that much of a surprise, especially those of you who follow my blog because you would know that I absolutely LOVE exotic skins (well except for croc).

Overall, I’m only feeling lukewarm towards the SS bags for 2011, but nonetheless, kudos to Christopher Bailey! He should be commended for the introduction of not just colours, but Acid colours to the brand, which is not just a bold move, but a drastic one.
