If the imagery on the Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 16 show invitation provided any clue at all, it seemed as if it was going to be a stone quarry of sorts. Unexpectedly, the show space at the Fondation Louis Vuitton had massive glass Romanesque columns with   of which, when light bounced off of it, looked more like crystals. There were even chips and slight cracks built into the structures, giving it a more authentic feel. To build these structures, Ghesquière enlisted the help of French artist Justin Morin, and guess what? 200,000 pieces of hand-fixed shattered mirrors were required to make these 57 columns. According to the Creative Director Tomb Raider served as inspiration behind the creation of the show set, indicating that he isn’t over his video games phase just as yet.

The runway looks were sportier than ever before: there were lots of combat boots with chunky heels, and also racing stripe motifs on jackets. And then there were the belt-chainlink-harness scarf prints motif on dresses and tops, and colour-blocked figure-hugging stretch-knit bustier trompe l’oeil dresses that flared out into a lighter floatier scarf-like fabric at the bottom for that breezy feel, which were my favourite. And then there were also leather pants and harnesses, in line with that Tomb Raider heroine.

There was a vast collection of bags – the Twist and Petite Malle sported a new scarf print handle, and then there were the trunks in either monogram, leopard or snow leopard, the backpack which now came in a slightly bigger size compared to the teeny-tiny mini version that’s currently in stores, a faux trunk bag which had the shape but gave the impression that the bottom was collapsible because it wasn’t as structured or stiff, the banker’s signature which was first spotted on the Petite Malle (the 3 x’s) was also now stamped onto a larger squarish bag. And then there was the sportier line, with the Speedy, Petite Malle, and the Twist that looked as it it came with sport-themed patches reminiscent of those stickers you’d get on your travel trunks back in the days – two of the notable ones being the LV logo on a badge, and a steering wheel. And then, the showstopper, and also my favourite of the lot: that hobo-esque bag shape with the 2 handles (think Jil Sander’s ‘plastic’ bags from seasons past or the silhouette of the Hermès Picotin) in its show-stopping multicoloured holographic glory which is sure to give you a boost of street cred! LoVe!
