#LFW: Burberry Prorsum SS16 Runway & Bags Report

Burberry changed the design of the show space for yesterday’s Spring/Summer 16 show. While the exterior glasshouse-esque as per usual, the brand opted for a more “open” space, without any doors boxing the audience inside. And, instead of the regular long runway going down the middle, the show space was altered, with the circular orchestral pit that divided the runway into half. Alison Moyet, the emergent British artist providing the soundtrack to the show, stood within the pit, but on an in-built platform positioned slightly above the orchestra.

In my earlier blogpost, I guessed that the sneak peek photos of the SS16 collection suggested a royal service uniform regalia theme, and yay, I got that part right. The collection was inspired by the Royal-Navy, which was also reflected on the detailing on the sandals. Creative Director Christopher Bailey certainly revisited Burberry’s first uniformed days, when the water-repellent trenchcoat was worn by army officers in the trenches during the Second World War. And perhaps because of this, along with laser-cut detailing and lace and long dresses that seemed like a somewhat updated Victorian silhouette, there was an abundance of outerwear: lace trenchcoats, pea coats with gold military-styled buttons, and satin duffle coats.

As for the bags, this time around, instead of the usual main silhouette coming down the runway, there were THREE!

First up, the Rucksack (also known as the backpack), made of gaberdine-constructed nylon, it features multiple zippered pockets and metal-chain shoulder straps with adjustable buckle details.

Next up, the Square Belt Bag: a small bag with chunky heavy-duty chain straps in a combination of smooth English suede and House check cotton with the oversized buckle closure reminiscent of the trench coat.

A variation of the above, the Oblong Belt Bag takes inspiration from the army officer’s shoulder bag from the Burberry archives.

All the outerwear and bags are available for Pre-Order from now until October 5. Not only would you receive your items 3 months before they launch globally in in Burberry stores, but pieces purchased during this period would, as usual, also come with a personalised metal plaque with “Made For (insert your name here)”.

If you missed the show live, you can still watch the FULL runway show via the on-demand service here
