Furla’s 90th Anniversary Collection

I really have to commend Furla on their brilliant concept and idea for their 90th Anniversary Collection. Since the brand was founded 1927, they have created a 9-bag collection around the Metropolis bag; one for each decade, beginning with the 1920s. The design of each bag is characterised by the type of American popular music associated with that particular decade, and inscribed with either  “20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, or 2000” to signify the decade, on its flap.

The 1920s was the age of the Charleston and Art Deco (think the Roaring Twenties, a.k.a. The Age of Excess thanks to the Great Boom in the United States, as portrayed in the Great Gatsby), and because of that, the bag’s flap is embellished with crystals and elongated gold studs.

The 1930s, was known as the Jazz Age, and for this one, the flap is made of tortoiseshell PVC with a mink fur border.

The 1940s was the era of Swing (think “Fly Me To the Moon” by Frank Sinatra), and because it’s also characterised by the pin-up girl, it’s got that cute polka dotted bow and a ruffled leather border.

The 1950s was synonymous with Rock ‘n’ Roll, most closely associated with Elvis and Little Richard. The design on this flap is one of my favourites because it’s got holographic details and a design inspired by the jukebox.

The 1960s was the decade of the British Invasion in popular music: the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and The Animals, hence the record on the turntable, with “The Furla” on the record in a similar font that is an allusion to The Beatles.

The 1970s is when people started heading to the clubs, which were known as “discotheques” back then, where people partied and danced to Disco music of ABBA, KC and the Sunshine Band, Donna Summer, and The Bee Gees. And in true disco fashion, the bag’s flap sports reflective discs reminiscent of the disco ball.

The 1980s saw the rise of Punk so it’s only natural that the flap sports studs and safety pins that resemble “piercings”.

The 1990s was the Age of Hip-Hop and Techno. In true “Bling Bling” style, there’s a chunky chain draped across the perforated flap and the number “90” on it, true to the Rapper style of basketball jerseys worn with big-a$$ necklaces.

The 2000s or the “Aughts”, is the Y2K decade, where technology and the digital world reign, as we move forward into the new millennium. The silver flap with the robot-esque face  gives off a futuristic vibe, but it’s a little Fendi Monster inspired for me.

Ahh writing this post actually felt like a “refresher” for me, and something that I could definitely relate to, because, as some of you already know, though my background is in Classical Music, I had actually previously lectured  the subject of American Music and Popular Culture at Monash University!

Now check out all the amazing bags in the video below!

The 90th Anniversary Collection is now available in Furla boutiques globally, but do note that the bag’s body, and the flap, are sold separately.
