RIMOWA x Daniel Arsham Limited Edition “Eroded Suitcase”

RIMOWA has collaborated with one of my favourite contemporary artists and sculptors, Daniel Arsham to revive one of the brand’s vintage suitcases from the brand’s archives. The result? A numbered, Limited Edition “eroded suitcase” multiple, presented as an archival object, complete with special art handling gloves. The sculpture is also housed in a contemporary edition of the vintage case that inspired Arsham’s masterpiece: A RIMOWA Classic Attaché, that made its debut during the Frieze NY Art Fair, earlier this month.

Approaching his artworks from an architecture, and performance art perspective, Arsham is known for creating deconstructed, or “eroded casts” of modern everyday objects, including human figures, out of geological materials such as sand, selenite or volcanic ash, to create the impression as if these fossilised artefacts have been dug up. This staging of the present as the past, is what he refers to as “future relics” of the present, which functions as a sort of social commentary through his artworks, on the planned obsolescence of seemingly “new” technologies, in an age of InstaCulture.

For this collaboration, the RIMOWA “eroded suitcase” is no different. Created as if it had been recently unearthed from an archaeological site, his completely plaster-white creation even bears the old RIMOWA logo, as a testament to having lived through the ages. This Limited Edition RIMOWA x Daniel Arsham “eroded suitcase” will also be auctioned at Sotheby’s – a first for the brand – presented as an exclusive single lot auction, featuring a signed drawing of the artwork, a personalised letter from Arsham himself, and a special edition luggage sticker set designed by RIMOWA and Arsham (below).

If any of you would like to get your hands on this piece of artwork by a contemporary artist, you can now find them at select RIMOWA boutiques globally, for HKD 16,700 (approx. MYR8,900) which is a small price to pay, really, for a piece of art by a renowned contemporary sculptor and artist.
