Louis Vuitton’s Papillon Trunk
Ah! For many, Louis Vuitton‘s Papillon handbag may have been the very first luxury purchase. This iconic bolster-/cylindrical- shaped bag without any adjustable straps, came in 3 sizes — the 19, 26, and 30 — one of which, even came with a teensy pouch which could be used on its own, or attached onto the straps of its big sister. After making its debut in Monogram Canvas, Vuitton also released Papillon bags in Damier Canvas, Monogram Vernis, Monogram Miroir, and Epi Leather, as well as other Limited Edition versions including the Papillon Monogram Cherry Blossom from the Takashi Murakami collaboration, in polka dots for the Yayoi Kusama, a watercolour version by Richard Prince, in graffiti by Stephen Sprouse, and several other iterations over the course of 50 years, before it was discontinued in 2009.
This year, Creative Director Nicolas Ghesquière revives this favourite Vuitton silhouette from the archives, by turning it into something edgier, by giving it a trunk-styled look with the S-Lock, and trunk trimmings and studs. It now also comes with a longer wide, adjustable shoulder strap, and a detachable, shorter gold chain strap for the perfect day-to-night transformation. Available in both Epi Leather (in yellow, black, or rose), as well as Monogram Canvas for MYR 11,500.
We’d say go for the latter if you want something distinctively Vuitton with a bit of old-world , but if you want something cooler, edgier, and more badass, it would definitely have to be black Epi.
