Paris Fashion Week: Hermes Spring/Summer 2011

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection is Jean Paul Gaultier’s last season, as he bids farewell to the House of Hermes — Christophe Lemaire is to make his debut next season, with the F/W 2011 collection for Hermes.

The Verdict: On the Hermes runway for Spring/Summer 2011, miniature Birkins and Kellys that could only probably fit your iPhone, seem to be all the rage. Those minis might not actually work, but if it were to be used as an attache, then it could. Well, either that, or JPG’s tapping into the celeb child market. Whatever his intention, JPG definitely set out to make his mark for his last collection for Hermes — he set a record for many firsts that haven’t ever been attempted on Birkins and Kellys: we saw wicker basket/rattan Kellys come down the runway. While the whole wicker theme might encapsulate the whole Spring/Summer vibe (think picnics in the park, or on your very own lawn), I really am not sure how (im)practical they will be — they could snag your clothes, and they probably will weigh quite a bit.
For me, though, the showstopper was the holy grail to all Birkins, the croc version. But not just any croc Birkin, but a transluscent one. Is there even such a thing? Well, it most certainly isn’t an urban legend; come S/S 2011 at Hermes, there very well could be. And because it’s so rare, I wonder just how long the waiting list for this one will be… not to mention the pricetag…
