Milan Fashion Week: Bottega Veneta Spring/Summer 2011

The Verdict: Textures seem to be the main theme for the house of Bottega Veneta for Spring 2011. Not only do we see the fusion of the iconic BV weave together with exotic skins such as lizard and croc; but also the mixing of the weave with smooth leather; or in the case of completely woven leathered totes, the contrast and texture came from the exposed contrast jagged stitching. Speckled canvas (ala ostrich skin) was also a new introduction into the BV household. Perhaps duality in terms of textures was what Maier was going for, and it was certainly well-achieved.

Classic BV staples like the oversized basket shopper and the knotted intrecciato evening clutches were also spotted on the runways, also in line with the dual textured theme – in a combination of leather and lizard, with a thicker and more puffy weave – were my favourites.
In terms of size (and style), we see shoulder bags and oversized totes, as Maier distances himself from the small bag trend for S/S 2011 that most of the other designers seem to be feeling. On the other hand, like the other designers, Crossbody bags certainly made their presence felt on the BV runway.
