Fad or Cult Classic: Alexander Wang’s Rocco Duffel

Born to Taiwanese-American parents, Alexander Wang launched his eponymous label in 2007, and in 2008, he won the Council of Fashion Designers (CFDA)/Vogue Fashion Fund for young emerging designers. Who knew that a Parsons drop-out could become one of the most sought after contemporary fashion designers today alongside other Asian-American designers like Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu and Phillip Lim?

Alexander Wang’s Rocco Duffel has been around for quite a few years now, yet it’s still one of the most covetable bags on Planet Fashion, and remains one of Wang’s classic staples from his accessories collection. At first glance, it looks unassuming, just like any other duffle bag … until you turn it over, that is, and you’ll be faced with a completely studded base either in rose gold, gold, or black nickel.

The studs proved to be a winning formula for Wang, who turned a regular duffle bag into something so sassy, spunky, and fashion forward. Pretty soon, the Rocco craze spread like wildfire, seen dangling from the arms of most celebs that belonged to the twenty-something age category (though I won’t say that it’s only suitable for this age group because it boils down to individual style!).

After the success of the Rocco, Wang continued to introduce different shapes to his accessory line. From hobos to bucket bags, they all had one thing in common: the studded base. But none of them have actually taken off the way the Rocco has, and from the looks of it, the craze doesn’t look as if it’s dying anytime soon. One thing’s for sure, Roccomania is certainly going to spread to KL, especially since the new Club 21 Multilabel store will be carrying the style when it opens its doors in Pavilion in September!

One of my all-time favourite bags on my current wishlist, it’s definitely a cult classic for me! What about you?
