Named after Alexa Chung, Mulberry‘s Alexa satchel single-handedly turned around the Brit label, literally rescuing the brand from going under. Along with Proenza Schouler‘s PS1 satchel, it spearheaded the satchel movement – converting the previously seasonal silhouette into a staple classic shape. But now, it’s time to move over Alexa, because there’s a new it-girl in town! Her name? Del Rey!
Mulberry takes its latest bag-spiration from Lana Del Rey, who burst onto the music scene with her hit single, Video Games. The 27-year-old singer’s personal style fuses contemporary with a touch of Old Hollywood glamour, which is certainly reflected in her namesake – the fuss-free and retro, yet classically modern, Del Rey bag.
Mulberry’s Creative Director, Emma Hill explained, “[Lana] inspired us to create a bag that was timeless, refined and elegant, yet with a beautiful practicality that would suit any woman … As soon as the sketches were completed it felt so familiar, loaded with classic Mulberry heritage DNA.”
For the upcoming Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, the Del Rey comes in the colours shown above. Available in two sizes (regular and oversized), it’s priced between RM 4,790 to RM 7,990.
The bag has gathered momentum in the celeb style circuit, and is already a waitlisted item overseas, with more than 3,000 people clamouring over this minimalistic beauty! For us Malaysians, however, the hype hasn’t caught on yet, so if you’re eyeing this, then you’d better snap it up quickly!
A perfect union of the old and new, I think Mulberry’s Del Rey is timeless enough to become a Cult Classic. But what say you? Reckon it’s just a passing fad?
