Trend Alert: Micro Sunglasses – Yay or Nay?
The thing about fashion is their cyclical tendencies … they come and go, and then they come back again over a decade later. Keep your accessories and clothing long enough, and you’d be able to wear them again in one or two decades. First, it was the revival of Doc Martens a couple of years back, and then the 1980s made a comeback with the return of the crop top. Now, it’s a throwback to the 90s with the latest craze: micro sunglasses. Perhaps Demna Gvasalia, Creative Director of Balenciaga can be credited for resuscitating this trend. After all, they first appeared on Balenciaga’s Fall/Winter 2017-18 catwalk, and then we saw them on Prada’s Spring/Summer 18 runway. Other brands like Saint Laurent, Louis Vuitton, Poppy Lissiman, George Keburia, and “it” eyewear brand Gentle Monster, too, have followed suit.

Pretty soon, this tiny eyewear trend began to gain traction, especially in the fashion and celebrity circuit. Micro sunnies have since been spotted on fashion influencers, supermodels Bella and Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, and the Kardashian clan. In fact, Kendall and Kylie have launched quite a few of these under their namesake label (check the bottom of this post for them).

Personally, I think they either make us look odd in a futuristic sci-fi kinda way, as if we’ve sprouted alien-esque eyes (or at least, how popular culture depicts aliens) in place of their own eyes, or, look like an extra from The Matrix. Or maybe you’d like to morph into a fly or any equivalent insect with buggy or compound eyes, then yes, these barely-there sunnies are certainly for you. Also, I know that fashion is sometimes impractical, yep I bet your gasping audibly now because, “how dare she! The audacity of that statement!” but, in such cases, well, at least where sunnies are concerned, I’d like them to do the job they’re made to: shield us from the scorching sun and protect our eyes from the damaging UV rays. So, while micro shades are all the rage right now, I’d be sticking to my oversized sunnies because I really don’t get what the fuss is about. However, If you’d like to score yourselves a pair, then check out my picks below.
