Apart from fashion, music (and thus also musicians) is yet another thing that I hold close to my heart. Although I am a classically-trained pianist and flautist, I had the opportunity to delve deeper into Jazz when I had to lecture a subject called American Music and Pop Culture (and did so for 5 consecutive years). And that's when my love affair with one of the biggest Jazz greats, Miles Davis (Miles Dewey Davis III), began. Ever the chameleon, his versatility enabled him to switch from Hard Bop and Cool Jazz to Fusion and Modal Jazz, in an instant. So you can imagine my excitement when I found out that Montblanc's latest Great Characters Limited Edition Collection of writing instruments -- there are 3 in total -- is a homage to him.
The Montblanc Great Characters Miles Davis Limited Edition 90 is just limited to 90 pieces globally. Why 90? Well, that's because 2016 would've been Davis's 90th Birthday, if he hadn't already passed on. I'm really loving the 3-dimensional the trumpet's valves with a trumpet in rose gold on the cap. Underneath the Au750 white gold, there's also a translucent resin underlay in blue which bears particular significance as it's a tribute to a particularly influential album from his œuvre entitled Kind of Blue.
The Montblanc Great Characters Miles Davis Special Edition sports a black resin cap and barrel with platinum-coated fittings, you have a choice between a Fountain Pen, Rollerball, and Ballpoint.
The Montblanc Great Characters Miles Davis Limited Edition 1926 is limited to, yup, you guessed it, 1926 pieces because that's his birth year. With a platinum-coated cap and barrel the fountain pen has a engraved silhouette of Davis playing his trumpet, in gold, and a white gold and agate Montblanc logo atop the cap.
As for me, I'm torn between the Limited Edition 90 and the 1926 because I love the design barrel design of the former, but his silhouette on the nib of the latter is much more meaningful. Either way, it's definitely a true collector's item which I would love to have.
