Splurge or Steal: Neon Minaudières -- Now Live on Tongue In Chic!

Hey y'all!

Welcome to Splurge or Steal, a new monthly segment where I’ll be picking out two similar bags that sport the same trend at two very different price points. For this very first edition of Splurge or Steal, I’ve picked neon minaudières (bag-speak for evening hard-cased clutches) to add splashes of colour to your outfits, especially your LBDs or what I call LCDs (Little cocktail dresses).

For April, my Steal is by Brazilian label Serpui Marie. Although she also creates handbags for day use, Marie is known mostly for her evening minaudières. Her designs have been featured in Vogue, In Style and Elle magazines (amongst others) and is a favourite for fashion stylists abroad. Marie’s label is one of those slightly under-the-radar brands that are affordable, yet fashion forward.

The Marrakesh Minaudière comes with a long chain strap so you can sling it on to dance the night away, or for a more polished look, tuck the strap into the bag and use it as a handheld evening clutch. I personally love the oversized tassel, but if you’re not a fan, the tassel is removable. Perhaps what I love most about this minaudière is that it’s not at all obvious that it’s actually made of straw; especially with the ombré effect, it creates the illusion of embroidery that is woven onto the shell of the bag. Priced at USD187 (approximately RM561) via Shopbop, which ships to Malaysia for free, it’s definitely a steal especially since you’re getting two Spring/Summer 2012 trends – gradients and neons – all in one!

Next up, the Splurge of the month: Bottega Veneta’s knot clutch is one of my personal favourites, and has been for the longest time. Resurrected from the Bottega Veneta archives and re-introduced 2001, the knot clutch is one of the house icons and staples with plays on different textures, skins, and colours each season. For the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, the Memory Knot clutch is available in a variety of fluorescent hues like Sunset (Yellow; shown below), Fire (orange) and Shock (Shocking Pink) Nappa leather.

A hot favourite amongst A-List celebs on the Red Carpet, these Knot clutches don’t come cheap! At RM 9,000 a pop, think of it as a one-time investment because of its timeless appeal. Available at Bottega Veneta, Pavilion KL.

With all these colours in full bloom, Spring has definitely sprung. Which is your pick, the splurge or steal?
