NYFW: Marc Jacobs Spring/Summer 2011 Runway Review

This is my first Runway Review for this season. If you've been a regular reader or follower of my blog, you'd know that I hardly ever do RTW runway reviews, except for runway bags. Well, this season I was inspired to comment on the Marc Jacobs S/S 2011 collection because I managed to catch the livestream on http://live.marcjacobs.com early this morning.

These are my Fave picks from the 53 looks that MJ had on the runway today.

The Verdict: A lot of fashion editors have commented that the MJ collection is too much of a literal throwback to the seventies, and a sort of tribute to the designers of the past who had inspired Marc Jacobs, the man himself. I, however, loved the collection, and believe me when I say this, because I haven't really been loving his collections from the past few seasons.

While most designers seem to be doing white, neutrals and earthy tones with little embellishments so far this season, and thus channelling minimalist chic (or for the designers who showed at New York at least), Marc has upped the ante with his refreshing use of a fiery colour palette with lots of golds, reds, mustards, tans, and burnt oranges with a little bit of purple, pink and mauve thrown in.

The MJ runway was circular, with models emerging from a circular gold dome, we saw lots of satin, sheer dresses, stripes, jumpsuits, wide-legged pants, as well as dresses with pockets, coupled with a little bit of sequinned numbers thrown in. All these were embellished with giant flower details, be they as headbands, waist cinchers, or simply just details on the dresses. The models also sported big hair and some floppy hats, which, at times, made me feel as if I was watching a Cruise runway show rather than a Spring/Summer one.

And... of course, I haven't forgotten the bags! I have to say that although I'm a Bag Addict, I wasn't loving MJ's bags for S/S 2011. Marc seemed to be feeling clutches (mostly bi-toned) and this F/W's spillover trend of structured, boxy, vintage-esque bags with the long straps that look more Vuitton-esque (perhaps inspired by Vuitton's current F/W collection), rather than MJ's signature bag style.
